Curly Hair without the Heat

I am one of those girls who love to try anything with their hair! Short styles, long styles, died it red, purple, black, brown and blonde. All different curling techniques, straightening and I'm a huge fan of back combing! So its safe to say through my teenage years my hair suffered a large amount of abuse! It's only been since I finished university and came into the working world I really started to treat my hair better.

I stripped all the colour out of my hair because through the years the colours built up and in certain lights you could see it! It looked like I had no idea how to use a bottle dye! So after I got rid of all the colour it was time to cut off all the dead ends, I ended up having more off than expected so wanted it to grow back ASAP!

I didn't have the money at the time for good quality hair extensions and I didn't want to buy cheap ones because I didn't want it to be noticeable so I decided to give no heat on my hair a go for a couple of months! This meant I didn't straighten it, curl it, dry it just in an attempt to keep it as healthy as I could!

It was hard to start off with because my natural hair isn't naturally straight and it isn't naturally ringlet curls. It's somewhere annoyingly in between so depending on how I dry it, depends if I'm going to have a good hair week or not! The first couple of weeks I stuck it up in a bobble because without using my hair dryer I let it dry naturally and it went a bit fluffy looking and it really didn't look good! Even a shaggy dog's hair looked better! I almost gave up!

I could of put my rollers in but they're so small that I'd just be having tight curls all the time including sleepless nights due to them sticking in my head every time I moved slightly, so that was out of the question! Then I wanted to use my heated rollers just because I thought they've got to be better than my curling wand but that would be cheating. I was close to giving up!

Then I saw those headband curling tools online and it felt like my prayers has been answered, only thing is I couldn't wait any longer for nicer hair so I decided to find out an old headband of my own! Yes, I was that kid with all those annoying material headbands like a low budget Blair Waldorf! So I found that out, dampened my hair and started wrapping my hair around it. To start off with it took me while to get to grips with wrapping it because of how thin the band was in comparison to the one's I saw online but with practice I got the hang of it. I then went too sleep in hope that my hair would be nice enough to wear down the next morning! Needless to say the next morning I was like a kid at Christmas I was so excited to see the result - IT WORKED!

The curls were so big and bouncy I felt like I could step on the red carpet!

When I was a kid and I wore this particular headband I use to magically turn into Lara Croft and be in character all day - I'd still be her now if it was acceptable for a 22 year old to run around in her imagination!

I did try variations of this method without water and with how tightly I wrapped my hair and each one gave a different result. I do still use this trick when I know I haven't got time the next morning to sit and curl it for a good 20 minuets but when I use it I personally prefer the results when I dampen my hair and wrap it not too tightly but enough for it to stay in place all night!

So last night I decided to use this technique just so I could share my results with you but this is how it works on my hair...

So this was my hair before I wrapped it, I had straightened it that morning just for the comparison.

This is what my hair looks like after wrapping it so under all that hair is the headband. Once it's all in I give it an extra spray of water then I go to bed with it in. So in the morning it's just a case of unravelling it all.

This was the result I got in the morning. Like anytime I curl my hair I do separate the curls to add more volume.

So that's my way of creating curls without using heat. I must add that I am no profession and there are probably plenty more ways of doing curls without heat but this is the way that worked for me!

Let me know if you have any other ways of curling your hair without heat in the comments below, I'd love to give them a try!

If you liked this post please give it some love with the heart at the bottom!
